The Higgins Barn, located on Oak Hill Road, is a one-and-a-half story English barn on a fieldstone foundation and roofed with asphalt shingles. The front facade has an asymmetrically placed exterior sliding door. The frame is hand hewn with much of the structure supported on upright posts and mortised and tenoned together with oak pegs. The barn is a remnant of the agricultural history and early European-American settlement in Bar Harbor. Residing on the former Higgins Farm at Indian Point, the family migrated from Massachusetts in 1763 and remained here for the next 190 years. During that time the family grew and continuously divided the land amongst its members. Located well west from the tourist areas of Bar Harbor and heavily visited areas of Acadia National Park, the area maintained its rural character while supporting their own community school and post office well into the twentieth century. By 1981, the land was subdivided into five large lots. As of 2003, one of the lots remained in the Higgins family.
