Farmington Historic District - Farmington, Franklin County

The Farmington Historic District encompasses the commercial center of Farmington along the Main Street and Broadway corridor, the University of Maine at Farmington campus at the south, and residential areas lying to the north and east. When the Town of Farmington was initially settled in the 1770s it was concentrated in the Farmington Falls Village area. Settlement in what became the heart of the town did not take off until the first years of the 1800s but sharply increased after Farmington was named the county seat in 1838. The earliest properties in the district include two green spaces: the 1802 Farmington Common on Main Street and the 1803 Centre Burying Ground on Church Street. The earliest residences in the district are Federal in style and are typically two stories tall with symmetrical front facades. The c.1810 Joseph Titcomb House retains those Federal-style elements along with a large central chimney and sidelights flanking the front entry.
