Located southwest of downtown Hallowell, the Elm Hill Farm consists of a farmhouse, garage, storehouse, and barn with farm fields interspersed with fences and hedges. The farmhouse is a modest dwelling with a side-gabled roof, two interior end chimneys, gabled dormer, and a central entry. The dormers and interior chimneys were added later to create additional space in the upper story. John Merrick constructed the house in 1799 upon his return to Hallowell from England after marrying Rebecca Vaughan. His marriage to Rebecca only strengthened his existing ties with the prominent Vaughan family, who were descendants of the founders of Hallowell. He had previously served as Dr. Benjamin Vaughan's children's tutor and resided with them in Hallowell for several years. Merrick had a classical education and served on the boards of the Hallowell Academy and Bowdoin College for many years. He also served as a Selectman, Surveyor, and Overseer of the Poor. The farm was later purchased by the Vaughan family and became known as Elm Hill Farm or Vaughan Farm in the twentieth century.
