Col. Meltiah Jordan House, 1817 - Ellsworth, Hancock County

Located on State Street in Ellsworth, the Colonel Meltiah Jordan House, is a two-story Federal-style structure, one of the most detailed in the area. It has an octagonal shuttered cupola and a balustrade around the low hipped roof. The symmetrical front facade has a central door covered by a portico (or porch) and flanked by 6-panel sidelights. The house has an excellent example of a Palladian window on the east side and a three-part window above the portico. Jordan moved to Ellsworth in 1775 and worked in the merchant and lumber business until he was appointed Collector of Frenchman's Bay in 1789. A father of thirteen children, Jordan built the house for his oldest son, Benjamin, who later sold it to a prominent citizen and shipbuilder, Seth Tisdale. In 1897, George Nixon Black, an Ellsworth native and resident of Boston, purchased the dwelling and remodeled it to serve as the towns library, which opened the following year. It remains the Ellsworth Public Library today with a rear addition completed in 1991.

Year Listed: 1974
