Located just north of Route 1 in central Kennebunk, the Bourne Mansion is an excellent example of the Federal style. It is three stories high, wood framed, with a low-pitch hipped roof. The main facade faces south with a secondary entrance on the west, street facing elevation. The south entry, located in the center, is framed by Tuscan pilasters, sidelight windows and topped by an elliptical leaded fanlight. Above the entry on the second floor is a Palladian window (a three-sash window configuration with a large center window flanked by two narrow windows.) The third floor windows are smaller, a common feature in Federal homes. The west entry is located slightly off center and is framed by pilasters and topped by a semi-circular fanlight. Interior chimneys are located at each corner. The house was built by John Parsons, a successful merchant, and modeled after his wife's house in Newburyport, Massachusetts. The property was sold to the Sewall family in 1815. Edward Bourne, Jr. inherited the house from his aunt, Mrs. William Sewall in the late nineteenth century.
