Alna Meeting House, c.1789 - Alna, Lincoln County

The Alna Meeting House is a two-story building set on a hillside facing south towards Wiscasset. When constructed it was located in the North Precinct of the larger town of Pownalborough (now Dresden) before Alna was incorporated as New Milford in 1794. Centrally located, it served those living in the villages of Alna Center, Head Tide, Puddle Dock, and points beyond. Constructing a meeting house was one of the most important tasks a burgeoning community would take on. Reverend Jonathan Ward served as pastor for nearly twenty years followed by ten more pastors before the establishment of other churches limited the need of activity here. The meeting house is similar to others in Maine with an attached stair pavilion holding the main entrance and large multipaned windows to let in as much light as possible. The interior is also austere with hand hewn pillars supporting a balcony which overlooks the first-floor sanctuary. Pew boxes, five-foot square, take up the sanctuary space with a pulpit high above on the north wall. Pew boxes were often paid for by families to raise the capital necessary to build meetinghouses.
