The Federal Street Historic District is comprised of 138 buildings, mostly residential, that represent a wide array of architectural styles spanning over two centuries. The area extends over seven streets near downtown Brunswick. Included in the district are thirty-six educational and nine fraternal buildings located on the Bowdoin College campus, four churches, and numerous commercial and public use structures. There are many buildings demonstrating the Federal, Greek Revival, and Colonial Revival styles within the district. Nine buildings pre-date 1820-including one on the college campus (Massachusetts Hall). The first European-American settlers came to the area during the early seventeenth century, but the town was not incorporated until 1737. Like many New England coastal towns, Brunswick's economy was based on the shipping and trade industries prior to statehood. Many of the dwellings and commercial buildings in the district were constructed during the nineteenth century indicating a time of economic prosperity for the community. The Federal Street Historic District reflects Brunswicks historical role as a commercial and educational center in Maine.
