February 11, 2003 Earthquake in Central Maine


The Canadian Seismic Network reports a very small earthquake occurred at 7:43:20 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Tuesday, February 11, 2003 in central Maine.

The following parameters have been calculated for the earthquake (this is a preliminary determination):

Preliminary magnitude 2.1 MN
Preliminary location 43.39 deg. North latitude, 69.22 deg. West longitude
Depth shallow (approx. 5 km)
This places the epicenter in southern Piscataquis County, about 8 miles northwest of Brownville Junction and 13 miles north of Dover-Foxcroft.


Further Information:

This earthquake was too small to be detected by the New England Seismic Network. The Maine Geological Survey did not receive any felt reports.
