Long Creek Visitation

It is the policy of the Maine Department of Corrections, and Long Creek Youth Development Center to allow resident visitation with family, friends and professional visitors under conditions that are consistent with the safety, security, and orderly management of the facility.

Visitation Rules

The following rules provide visitors with clear and concise information regarding visit procedures and visitation to prevent conflict or confusion regarding our expectations and to ensure that the visitor and resident have a positive experience.

  1. Residents committed to the facility by a court for an indeterminate period (e.g., up to age 18) are allowed two visits a week, and all other residents are allowed visits once a week.

  2. Each housing unit has its own visitation schedule.  Units Visitation Schedule

  3. The Juvenile Program Manager, or designee, of the resident’s housing unit shall obtain the visitor’s name, relationship to the resident, address, and phone number to process an authorized visit.

  4. All visitors must complete the Juvenile Facility Visitor Application Form (Please see right hand column) to be permitted resident visitation. Completed visitor applications verifying the relationship to the resident (e.g., custody order, marriage certificate, birth certificate) are subject to approval by the Juvenile Program Manager. Detained youth will be allowed one visit prior to the submission and completion of a Visitor Application Form.  

  5. All visitor applications will include a background check, and any visitor denied visitation will receive a letter in the mail stating the reason for the denied visitation.

  6. All visitors must arrive at Long Creek Youth Development Center at least 15 Minutes Prior to the scheduled visit, for processing and COVID-19 Screening. Failure to adhere to this time frame will result in denial of the visit.

  7. Visitation is not allowed to any individual under the influence of alcohol or drugs or is in possession of such contraband. Individuals shall not convey an illegal drug, weapon, or escape tool to facility staff or official.

  8. Visitation shall not be allowed if the visitor is wearing inappropriate apparel. The following items are considered inappropriate attire and are not allowed:

    • Any clothing that reveals undergarments or cleavage includes see though mesh and fishnet.
    • Headgear of any kind, e.g., hats, bandanas, metal hair ornaments (may be allowed for religious/medical reasons when authorized by visit supervisor/shift commander).
    • Hooded sweatshirts/shirts.
    • Outer jackets designed to be worn outdoors will not be permitted into the visit room, including pullover style jackets.
    • Sweaters must be buttoned or zipped during visits.
    • Low-cut sweaters, blouses V-Necks, tank tops, or “tube” tops and shirts that expose any level of cleavage or breast area below the collar bone.
    • Scarves, shawls, ties, or wraps.
    • Athletic style clothing which includes sweatpants/shirt, bathing suits.
    • Sleeveless garments.
    • Shorts, dresses, skirts and skirt slits will not exceed 2” above the knee while sitting.
    • Spandex or what appears to be spandex material.
    • Any ripped, torn, or altered clothing is not allowed.
    • Attire displaying gang affiliations or gang culture, as well as attire that is obscene, racist, drug and alcohol related or displays sexual content is prohibited.
  9. Family visits shall be limited to four people per visit. Exceptions require the written approval of the Superintendent, or designee.

    • All children must be seated within the immediate vicinity of the parents or guardians. Children may not sit unsupervised. Children must remain seated, may not climb on furniture, or disturb other visitors in any way, which includes yelling, screaming, or throwing things.
  10. Adult visitors are required to present a government-issued picture identification, e.g. a valid driver’s license, prior to admittance into the visitation area.


  11. Visitors under the age of 18 are required to present government-issued identification, e.g. current state I.D. card, prior to admittance into the lobby area.

  12. All visitors must enter the facility through the Main Lobby. All personal belongings must be left in the visitor’s vehicle or in lockers located in the lobby area. Visitors must pass through the metal detector located in the lobby and may not bring additional items for residents into the visitation area or leave items for residents at the lobby desk.

  13. Visitors may use the designated restrooms located in the lobby area. Facility staff supervising visits shall control access to these restrooms. Visitors and residents shall not be allowed access to the same restroom.

  14. FOOD MAY NOT BE BROUGHT INTO THE FACILITY

  15. All tobacco products must be secured in the visitor’s vehicle

  16. Visitors and their vehicles shall be subject to search.

  17. All visits shall occur in the designated visitation area.

  18. Visitors are not allowed to leave and re-enter the visitation areas once the visit has begun.

    • Should a minor have to leave the visit area accompanied by an adult, neither the adult nor the minor be allowed to re-enter the visit area.

  19. Visitors shall not take any photographs during visits or at any other time, while on the grounds of the Long Creek Youth Development Center.

  20. During contact visitation, a visitor and resident may embrace or kiss briefly at the beginning and end of the visit. Residents and visitors may hold hands during the remainder of the visit. The hands of the resident and visitor must remain visible during the visitation.

    • Unless restricted, a resident may hold their minor children in their lap.

  21. Facility staff shall be present in the visitation area to supervise the conduct of visitors and residents. If any visitor or resident exhibits behavior that is inappropriate, including excessive physical contact, or involves criminal activity, violation of the facility rules, or is a risk to the safety of persons, security, orderly management of the facility, or the welfare of the resident or other residents, the visit shall be terminated by the staff, and all persons visiting that resident shall be required to leave facility property immediately.
