Sustainable timber harvesting. Real-world workforce training. Quality work for Maine landowners.

The Maine Department of Corrections Professional Logging Program, based at the Mountain View Correctional Facility (MVCF) in Charleston, Maine, is a hands-on training program that teaches incarcerated residents the core skills of conventional logging while providing harvesting services for landowners across the state. The program is a registered apprenticeship with the Maine Department of Labor and uses the Certified Logging Professional (CLP) curriculum as a benchmark for completion. Program supervision includes staff with current CLP certification and Maine wood scaler licensure.

What We Do

The Professional Logging Program works with:

  • Private landowners
  • Municipalities
  • State entities

We harvest wood and timber with a focus on:

  • Safe, professional logging practices
  • Respect for landowner goals
  • Responsible forest management
  • Protection of residual stands and future forest growth

Our goal is to provide quality work at fair market value while helping participants build skills in logging safety, harvesting practices, and industry standards.

Why Work with Us

Landowners who work with the program can expect:

  • A team trained in conventional logging methods
  • Oversight by qualified, certified staff
  • A harvest approach that considers both current objectives and the long-term condition of the forest
  • Written contracts with landowners
  • Stumpage payments based on market-informed pricing guidance

Service Area

The program has completed timber harvest projects across Maine, including communities ranging from Millinocket in northern Maine to Warren in the Midcoast region. We welcome opportunities to work with private landowners, municipalities, and state agencies seeking responsible timber harvesting that aligns with their land management goals.

Pricing and Stumpage

Stumpage payments for harvested timber are based on current market prices at the time of harvest. Pricing will vary depending on species, timber quality, accessibility, and market conditions.

For general reference, landowners may review the Maine Forest Service "Stumpage Price Report", which summarizes average stumpage prices paid to landowners in previous years. This report is intended as a historical reference and does not represent current or guaranteed pricing.
