The Patten Free Library, located in Bath, Maine, is a non-profit library that serves the City of Bath and the Towns of Arrowsic, Georgetown, West Bath, and Woolwich. (Total population served is app. 15,279.)

Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director, the Teen Engagement Librarian develops, implements, and evaluates engaging library services and programs for teens grades 6-12. This position also cultivates strong relationships with schools, community partners, and local organizations.

Hours of work: 20 hours per week (afternoons; evenings and Saturdays as needed)

Start Date: July 6, 2026

Responsibilities:

  • Creates a welcoming, creative, vibrant, and dynamic space for tweens and teens that attracts them to the library.
  • Plans, implements, promotes, and evaluates library programs and services that fulfill the diverse educational, recreational, and personal needs of teens in the community.
  • Involves young adults in planning and implementing services for their age group, including recruiting and coordinating a Teen Library Council.
  • Develops partnerships and outreach opportunities with community organizations, including local schools.
  • Instructs teens and families in information gathering, research, and digital literacy skills.
  • Assists in development and administration of library policies and procedures.
  • Attends staff meetings, participates in staff and board committees as appropriate.
  • May oversee young adult collection development and maintenance.
  • May serve as backup for reference and circulation services as needed.
  • May participate in library fundraising activities.

Education/Experience:

  • A bachelor's degree.
  • A Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited library school is preferred.
  • Professional experience working with young adults.
  • One or more years of professional experience in a public library setting.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the developmental, educational, and recreational needs of teens, as well as current trends in library services for teens.
  • Ability to design, implement, and evaluate engaging, inclusive programs and activities for teens that support creativity, learning, digital literacy, and social connection.
  • Familiarity with young adult literature.
  • Knowledge of standard library procedures, current information technologies, internet and database search capabilities, and library automation systems; ability to provide reference and readers advisory services.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to maintain cooperative and courteous working relationships with the public, peers, and supervisors.
  • Ability to prioritize job responsibilities, work independently, and be self-motivated.
  • Proficiency in a wide variety of computer software and hardware, with eagerness and flexibility to learn emerging technologies in a continuously evolving technological environment.

Conditions of Employment: Afternoons, evenings, and weekends required. Must have a valid drivers license and reliable transportation to visit area schools and community organizations.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position: extended periods of standing, lifting up to 50 lbs., bending, pushing and pulling book carts.
