What does a Business Analyst do?
- Once the Project Manager understands the project scope, size, and complexity (w/in 4 weeks of engagement)
- Works under the direction of the Project Manager, with oversight by the Project Manager
- Analyzing and documenting organization problems
- Eliciting, identifying, and prioritizing technical and functional requirements
- Assess current-state business processes; define/document future-state in alignment with project objectives
- Delivers data-driven recommendations
- Creates reports for Executives and Stakeholders presentation
- Creates detailed business analysis, outlining problems, opportunities, evaluating options and recommending solutions for organization problem
- Defining solution requirements
- Always asking: what do the systems need to do, how do they do it, who do we need to get input from, and how do we get everyone to agree on what we need to do before we go and do it
What to expect from a Business Analyst?
- Clear definition and delivery of product or solution scope: characteristics, features, or functions of the product or service to be built; solution scope is all about the solution to be implemented: how it will look like, how it will function, and other characteristics
- Communications involving project stakeholders who are affected by the solution requirements
- Deliver a requirements plan (requirements elicitation, analysis, and documentation) that is able to feed into the project management plan
- Develop a traceability matrix to trace requirements to objectives
- Provide constant communications as to progress, risks, and new opportunities throughout elicitation and analysis efforts
- Perform data analysis, process modeling, and reporting expectations
- Be the PM's 'right hand' throughout the project
