Certified Local Government Grant Funds Available Now for 2025

The Maine Historic Preservation Commission anticipates awarding approximately $95,000 in 75/25 matching grants in 2025 for the preparation of National Register nominations, Architectural or Archaeological Survey, or Preservation Planning, Education, Archaeology, Development or Pre-Development projects. The deadline for applications is October 3, 2025.

Eligible historic buildings and sites are those that are listed in the National Register of Historic Places either individually or as contributing resources in a National Register-listed historic district.

Eligible applicants are limited to municipal governments with CLG status, and non-profit institutions as defined by the Internal Revenue Service applying through those municipal governments. Projects must be directed by persons with professional credentials as defined by the Department of the Interior and must be completed by May 31, 2027.

The Commission's CLG Grant Manual provides information about eligible projects and expenses, as well as the project selection process, including selection criteria. Funding priorities for 2025 include the establishment of historic building trades training programs, conducting building condition assessments on historic buildings and helping organizations prepare plans and specifications in anticipation of building projects. A complete list of funding priorities is available in the grants manual.

Applications are due October 3, 2025, with an optional draft application review offered for applications submitted by September 19, 2025.

A grant workshop will be held via TEAMS on August 19, 2025 at 12:00 pm. Call 287-2132 x0 or lauren.swain@maine.gov for access information.
