Foliage Color Continues to Change Across Maine
AUGUSTA, Maine (September 24, 2003)
In its latest fall foliage report, the Maine Department of Conservation has classified three of the state’s seven foliage tracking zones as having moderate leaf color change.
Overall, Maine Forest Service rangers are reporting moderate, or close to 50 percent, color change in the mid-west (Zone 5) part of Maine, stretching from Bethel to Jackman; the extreme northwest (Zone 6), and the extreme northeast (Zone 7). Aroostook State Park Manager Frank "Fritz" Appleby reports near peak color, or 50 to 75 percent, in and around the park located near Echo Lake, off U.S. Route 1, south of Presque Isle.
Downeast Maine (Zone 2), central Maine (Zone 3), and eastern Maine from Calais to Houlton (Zone 4) currently have low, or less than 30 percent, color change. Leaf color change remains low, or less than 10 percent, in southern coastal Maine. Rangers are also reporting increases in leaf drop. All tracking zones with the exception of 1 and 3, now have low, or less than 30 percent, leaf drop.
