The Maine State Library, along with the Maine Justice Action Group Collaboration on Innovation, Technology and Equal Access to Justice, will celebrate Law Day in public libraries statewide. Lawyers across the state will spend time in local libraries on Law Day, Wednesday, May 1, to provide resources and assistance to people in need, talk about statewide legal issues and meet with library patrons. Lawyers in Libraries: Law Day 2013 is a free event that is open to the public. It will take place in libraries statewide from noon-2:00 p.m.
Organizers of the series are the Maine Justice Action Group Collaboration on Innovation, Technology and Equal Access to Justice (the Collaboration) which includes the Maine State Bar Association, Pine Tree Legal Assistance, Maine’s public libraries, the Volunteer Lawyers Project, the State of Maine Judicial Branch, and other organizations interested in helping people access the legal resources they need, all working under The Maine Justice Action Group.
The goal of the day is twofold: to provide Maine citizens with access to legal advice and information and to demonstrate how legal access is critical to a community’s well-being; an entire community suffers when neighbors and friends go through foreclosure, are not safe in their homes, or cannot afford heat or food.
"Access to justice is a fundamental right that we all believe we have as citizens of this state and nation," explains Hon. Andrew M. Mead, Associate Justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, "But for many individuals lack of access to legal assistance profoundly affects their lives and the lives of their families. The Lawyers in Libraries program will raise awareness of these issues and provide individuals with an opportunity to connect with legal resources at a familiar location in their communities."
Linda Lord, Maine State Librarian, stated that "Maine public libraries recognize how critical access to legal information is for many Maine citizens and libraries are honored to assist in Law Day efforts statewide”.
Participants in Lawyers in Libraries: Law Day 2013 will have an opportunity to meet with a lawyer based in their community and receive information about free resources, low-cost legal assistance and legal referrals. In addition, some attendees will have the opportunity for a brief private consultation with an attorney about personal legal matters.
