Research at the Maine State Archives
The offices and research facilities of the Maine State Archives are currently located at 17 Elkins Lane (Williams Pavillion) in Augusta. To meet safety protocols and to ensure we have material ready for you, in-person research at the Maine State Archives is currently accommodated by appointment only. To begin your search, check our online catalog. Many documents are available online, via the Maine State Archives Digital Maine repository and DigitalMaine Transcription Project, and genealogy information is available via the Archives’ collection on FamilySearch.
The Cultural Building, which houses the Maine State Archives (MSA), Maine State Library (MSL), and Maine State Museum (MSM), is currently closed to the public to allow significant upgrades to the facility’s mechanical systems. Learn more here and visit our website for updates.
For Superior Court records after 1929 and District Court records after 1960, please contact the appropriate court to access these records. Contact information can be found on the courts' website.
As of May 1, 2015, the Data, Research and Vital Statistics, Vital Records Office, DHHS, issues ALL vital records from 1892 to present.
