Health Insurance for Individuals and Families

Maine's health insurance market offers many choices for major medical and dental coverage.

Major Medical Plans

CoverME.gov is the one stop shop for Mainers looking for health coverage. There you will find information about purchasing major medical insurance, qualifying for free or low cost MaineCare coverage, and how and where to get free help with your questions and applications.

Be aware that the only comprehensive, major medical plans approved for sale directly to individuals and families in Maine (versus through an employer) are offered by Aetna, Anthem Healthplans of MaineHarvard Pilgrim HealthcareCommunity Health Options, Taro Health, and United Healthcare.

Plans can also be purchased directly through these six companies, but if you qualify for subsidies to help lower the cost of your monthly premium, you should shop through CoverME.gov to have the subsidies applied.

Comprehensive major medical plans provide broad coverage for a wide range of health services such as office visits, lab work, emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and medications.

NOTE: The comprehensive major medical plans sold by the six companies listed above are the only plans required by law to pay for a certain percentage of your medical costs and to cover pre-existing conditions (conditions you were treated for, or consulted a provider about, before purchasing coverage). Other plans - called limited benefit plans - may sound like they will save you money but can cost you many times more if you have a serious illness, hospitalization, or accident requiring medical care.

To learn more about what goes into a comprehensive major medical plan see the information about Marketplace Plans at CoverME.gov.

You may also find it helpful to read the Bureau's information about the different types of provider networks before purchasing a plan.

Dental Plans

Individuals and families can buy dental insurance either as a “stand alone” product (purchased separately) or as part of a medical plan. Information about both options can be found at CoverME.gov.

Stand alone plans can also be viewed on the following charts:

NOTE: children covered by medical plans purchased through CoverME.gov must have dental coverage, and subsidies can only be applied to pediatric dental plans purchased at CoverME.gov.
