BCCP Advisory and Update September 2025
September 24, 2025
New laws passed during the first session of the 132nd Maine Legislature are in effect beginning September 24, 2025. Two laws in particular affect Bureau licensees:
- Public Law Chapter 201 (PDF) prohibits reporting of medical debt on consumer reports. This new law impacts medical creditors, debt collectors (including debt buyers), and consumer reporting agencies.
- Public Law Chapter 294 (PDF) prohibits businesses from using AI chatbots with consumers in a manner that may mislead consumers into believing they are engaging with a real person, unless clearly and conspicuously disclosing that the consumer is not engaging with a human being.
If you have any questions regarding these changes, please get in touch with the Bureau at CCP.PFR@maine.gov or 207-624-8527.
