Bureau Issues Warning About Phone Scam

The Maine Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection's phone number, (207) 624-8527, has been used in some spoofing and phishing scams in the last several days.

Spoofing is a type of scam where someone disguises a phone number, email address, sender name, or website URL to convince the recipient that they are interacting with a trusted source. Phishing is an attempt to obtain personal information by pretending to be someone legitimately in need of such information.

Do not share any personal information in response to unsolicited phone calls, texts or emails. Also, do not use the contact information from the caller, click on a link in a text or email, or push a button on your phone keypad.

The Maine Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection will never call, text or email you requesting personal information. If you receive such a call, text or email please notify the Bureau immediately.
