FAQs
- What are the Standard Occupation Classification (SOC) codes?
The SOC system groups occupations by their job duties, and their education and skill requirements. More detail is available here.
- How is occupational employment and wage data compiled?
Estimates of the number of jobs and wages paid for occupations are compiled through a survey of close to 3,000 employer establishments each year. That information is extrapolated to all employers. Average and median wages, as well as 25th and 75th percentile figures are published.
- What do mean, median, and percentile wages represent?
The mean wage is the average for an occupation. The median is the middle figure if all compiled information was put in lowest to highest order. Using that same method, 25th percentile represents the figure for which 25 percent earned less; the 75th percentile represents the figure for which 75 percent earned less. The 25th and 75th percentiles often reflect less or more experienced workers than the median.
