In 2006, communities from York to Fort Kent came together to discuss Maine’s most serious drug problem – underage drinking. Twenty-seven meetings shared the message, “Underage drinking is a community problem and it needs a community solution.” These summits were part of a national effort sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA).

Now in 2008, Mainers are again convening Underage Drinking Prevention Town Hall Meetings to help their communities learn about the consequences of underage drinking and mobilize concerned citizens to address this issue. With SAMSHA sponsorship, these Town Hall Meetings will be held starting mid March until mid June, 2008. Local organizers are inviting everyone in their communities to attend including parents, youth, law enforcement, educators, municiple officers, public officials and representatives, and any concerned citizen. Possible key statewide speakers for these meetings across the state may be First Lady Karen Baldacci, Attorney General Steve Rowe, Former First Lady Mary Herman, Office of Substance Abuse Acting Director Sheldon Wheeler, and Commissioner of Public Safety Anne Jordan.
