Eccentric Bog Ecosystem

  State Rank: S3

Gently sloping raised bogs on the sides of shallow valleys. The slope of the bog is patterned, with ridges of dwarf shrub bog (sometimes semi-forested) alternating with troughs containing bog pools and/or moss lawns. Ridges and troughs run perpendicular to the direction of water flow. The upslope end is typically dryish for a bog and dominated by ombrotrophic vegetation; moisture and mineral availability increase downslope, and consequently the lowest areas have fen vegetation. In Maine, eccentric bogs appear to be restricted to the east central region, roughly from Lincoln north to Ashland and east to the Canadian border.
