Statement from Commissioner Joan Cohen on Passing of Former Insurance Superintendent Eric Cioppa

05/07/2026

“The Maine Department of Professional and Financial Regulation (DPFR) and the Maine Bureau of Insurance (BOI) mourn the loss of Eric Cioppa, former Superintendent of the Bureau of Insurance, who passed away on May 1. Eric dedicated more than three and a half decades to public service and served as BOI Superintendent for over 10 years. He started his career at the BOI as a statistician in 1988. Eric also served as President of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), reflecting the high regard in which he was held nationally. At a recent NAIC meeting, I was struck not only by the deep respect colleagues expressed for Eric’s expertise, but also by the genuine warmth with which they spoke of his kindness and the lasting friendships he built throughout his career. My thoughts are with Eric’s family, friends, former colleagues and all who knew him.”
