Who can apply to be an Apprentice Insurance Producer? Applicants for an Apprentice Insurance Producer license must:
- Be 18 years of age or older.
- Be eligible for a Maine insurance producer license (other than taking the Maine insurance examination).
- Not have previously held or been denied a Maine insurance producer license or a comparable insurance producer license in any other jurisdiction.
- Not have previously held or been denied an Apprentice Insurance Producer license.
- Be a resident of the State of Maine at the time of application and remain a resident throughout the 180-day apprenticeship.
- Be employed by a licensed resident insurance producer who has applied and been approved to be a Sponsor by the Maine Bureau of Insurance.
- Have submitted an Apprentice Insurance Producer application that has been approved by the Maine Bureau of Insurance.
- Pay the $50 licensing fee.
When can I apply to be an Apprentice Insurance Producer?
Applications for an Apprentice Insurance Producer license may be submitted starting on January 1, 2026.
Which lines of authority can an Apprentice Insurance Producer hold? An Apprentice Insurance Producer may hold the following lines of authority:
- Property
- Casualty
- Personal Lines
- Credit
- Title
- Accident and Health (with the exception of activities relating to the Affordable Care Act, Annuities, and Long Term Care Insurance- see prohibited below).
Which activities is an Apprentice Insurance Producer prohibited from performing?
An Apprentice Insurance Producer may not perform any activities that require training or authority in addition to an insurance producer license. This means that an Apprentice Insurance Producer may not perform producer activities relating to:
- The Affordable Care Act
- Long Term Care Insurance
- Annuities
- Life Insurance
What are the other limitations on an Apprentice Insurance Producer’s activities?
Additional limitations on the Apprentice Insurance Producer’s activities include:
- The Apprentice Insurance Producer’s activities must be limited to risks located in the State of Maine that would otherwise require a Maine insurance producer license.
- The Apprentice Insurance Producer may only engage in activities that their Sponsor is authorized to engage in under the Sponsor’s licensing authority (for example, if the Sponsor only has Life and Health authorities, the Apprentice Insurance Producer cannot engage in producer activities relating to Property and Casualty).
- The Apprentice Insurance Producer may not act as an agent of an insurer unless appointed by the insurer pursuant to 24-A M.R.S.§1420-M.
- Any other limitations that the Superintendent determines are necessary to protect insureds and the public.
For how long is an Apprentice Insurance Producer license valid?
An Apprentice Insurance Producer license is valid for no more than 180 days.
Is the Apprentice Insurance Producer license renewable?
No. After completing the 180-day apprenticeship, the Apprentice Insurance Producer cannot engage in any activities requiring an insurance producer license without obtaining an insurance producer license.
What are the applicable fees?
The licensing fee for the Apprentice Insurance Producer license is $50. There is currently no application fee for the Apprentice Insurance Producer license or for the Apprentice Insurance Producer Sponsor application.

Who can apply to be a Sponsor of an Apprentice Insurance Producer?
A Sponsor of an Apprentice Insurance Producer must:
- Have a Maine insurance producer license that has been in good standing for at least one year.
- Have submitted an Apprentice Insurance Producer Sponsor application that has been approved by the Bureau of Insurance.
- Meet any other requirements established by the Superintendent.
What are the Sponsor’s responsibilities?
The Sponsor assumes all legal responsibility for all of the Apprentice Insurance Producer’s acts. Additionally, the Sponsor is encouraged to:
- Provide paid training for the Apprentice Insurance Producer.
- Provide sufficient support and time to allow the Apprentice Insurance Producer to adequately prepare for their Maine insurance producer examination.
If I am currently behind on my Continuing Education (CE) credits, can I still be a Sponsor?
No. If you are not current in your CE credit requirements, then your license is not considered to be in “good standing” for purposes of the Apprentice Insurance Producer Sponsor application.
How many Apprentice Insurance Producers can one Sponsor have?
A Producer may sponsor no more than two active Apprentice Insurance Producers per calendar year.
What happens if the apprenticeship ends sooner than 180 days?
If the Apprentice Insurance Producer’s employment or apprenticeship ends before the end of the 180-day apprenticeship period, both the Apprentice Insurance Producer and the Sponsor are responsible for reporting the end of the apprenticeship to the Bureau of Insurance within 5 business days of the end of employment or the end of the apprenticeship.
Are there any other reporting requirements?
Yes. Both the Apprentice Insurance Producer and the Sponsor are responsible for reporting any administrative or criminal actions involving the Apprentice Insurance Producer to the Bureau of Insurance within 30 days in the same manner as required by licensed insurance producers under 24-A M.R.S. §1420-P.
Can the Superintendent revoke an Apprentice Insurance Producer’s license?
Yes. The Superintendent may by order revoke an Apprentice Insurance Producer’s license if the interest of insureds or the public is endangered or for any of the causes listed under 24-A M.R.S. §1420-K(1).
Can the Superintendent revoke a Sponsor’s authorization to employ an Apprentice Insurance Producer?
Yes. The Superintendent may revoke a Sponsor's authorization to employ an Apprentice Insurance Producer for failing to comply with any requirements of the sponsorship and for any of the reasons for disciplinary action under 24-A M.R.S. §1420-K(1).
