Another program that all Maine residents should be aware of is the Student Loan Repayment Tax Credit (SLRTC) -- one of the most valuable and broad-based state or local student loan repayment programs in the country. The SLRTC is a generous and straightforward tax credit:
- The State of Maine provides a $2,500/year, fully refundable tax credit, up to a lifetime total of $25,000-you just have to be living and working in Maine.
- That means, if your student loan payment is $208/month or less, the State of Maine will reimburse you 100% and essentially will have paid your student loans for you.
- It doesnt matter whether: youre a life-long Mainer or just moved to Maine; when or where you went to school; whether you got an associate, bachelors or graduate degree; what your degree was in; or what your profession is now.
