The Board of Licensure in Medicine and the Board of Osteopathic Licensure are discussing the feasibility of combining into a single Board that licenses and regulates physicians and physician associates.  In conducting the study, the Boards shall ensure that their primary purpose of protecting the public is the most paramount factor.

Pursuant to a letter from the Committee On Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Services the workgroup must submit a report to the committee no later than January 15, 2026.

The Board of Licensure in Medicine and the Board of Osteopathic Licensure submitted the Report to the Legislature on January 13, 2026.

LD 2233, An Act to Combine the Board of Licensure in Medicine and Board of Osteopathic Licensure into a Single Licensing Board for All Physicians and Physician Associates, was introduced on March 12, 2026.  the full bill and its status can be found by entering the bill number on the Maine Legislature's webpage, https://legislature.maine.gov/.
