State of Maine Proclamation

 

To the Members of the Democratic, Green Independent, Libertarian and Republican Committees of Chester, East Millinocket, Medway, Millinocket, Mount Chase, Patten, Woodville, and unorganized townships Residing in Representative District 29.

GREETINGS:

WHEREAS, by the January 10, 2026, death of Kathy Javner of Chester, in the County of Penobscot, a member of the House of Representatives in the One Hundred and Thirty-second Legislature in District 29, a vacancy has thus been created; and

WHEREAS, Title 21-A of the Maine Revised Statutes, Section 382 provides that if a vacancy occurs in the office of Representative to the Legislature, and the municipal officers of any affected municipality inform the Governor that there is a need to fill the vacancy before the next general election, the Governor shall issue a proclamation declaring the vacancy and ordering a special election, and 

WHEREAS, the municipal officers of Medway notified the Governor on January 20, 2026, of a need to fill the vacancy;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JANET T. MILLS, Governor of the State of Maine, do hereby order the appropriate members of the Democratic, Green Independent, Libertarian and Republican Committees addressed above to meet to nominate their candidates for Representative to the Legislature in District 29, to be voted on at the Special Election to be held on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. 

A Certificate of Nomination for each candidate for District 29, required pursuant to Title 21-A of the Maine Revised Statutes, Section 363, shall be filed in the office of the Secretary of State on or before 5 p.m. on Friday, March 6, 2026. The Declaration of Write-in Candidacy of any write-in candidate shall be filed in the office of the Secretary of State on or before 5 p.m. on Friday, March 13, 2026. 

The members of the above-named political committees are hereby directed to comply fully in the conduct of the meeting and the making of the certificate with all of the provisions of law relating to the proposal of candidates for election as provided in Title 21-A of the Maine Revised Statutes.
