WHEREAS, Cooper Flagg, a Maine native, has demonstrated extraordinary talent and dedication to the sport of basketball, earning national recognition as one of the most promising players of his generation, and serving as a source of pride and inspiration for youth and all people of Maine; and

WHEREAS, his skill and commitment have propelled him to remarkable success in his basketball career, including being named the 2025 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Player of the Year, the 2025 ACC Rookie of the Year, and earning First Team All-ACC honors during his freshman season at Duke University, where he led his team in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks; and

WHEREAS, Cooper's excellence extends beyond collegiate basketball to the international stage, where he represented the United States at the 2022 FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup, and was honored as USA Basketball's Male Athlete of the Year; and

WHEREAS, Cooper has consistently exhibited the values of hard work, perseverance, and sportsmanship, inspiring young athletes across Maine to pursue their dreams with determination and integrity and encouraging them to prioritize their physical and mental wellbeing; and

WHEREAS, his remarkable achievements, both on and off the court, have brought positive attention to the State of Maine, showcasing the strength and potential of our local communities, while also exemplifying the true meaning of Maine's state motto, Dirigo ("I lead"), through his exceptional leadership and competitive drive;

NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that I, Janet T. Mills, Governor of the State of Maine, do hereby proclaim June 25, 2025 as

Cooper Flagg Day

in Maine, and I encourage all citizens to actively participate in sporting events and activities designed to celebrate the spirit of good sportsmanship and teamwork, foster an appreciation for sports and physical activity, and promote the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle.
