State of Maine Proclamation

 

WHEREAS, the State of Maine holds over 300 million dollars worth of unclaimed property, consisting of money and other financial assets that are considered lost or abandoned when an owner cannot be located after a certain period of time; and 

WHEREAS, for over four decades, the State of Maine has received millions of dollars a year in assets from entities who cannot locate the owners of these assets and is committed to reuniting these assets to their rightful owners; and

WHEREAS, the State of Maine holds over four million individual accounts to be returned to Maine citizens; and

WHEREAS, each year, claims paid represent over 50% of what the State of Maine receives in unclaimed property that year;

NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that I, Janet T. Mills, Governor of the State of Maine, do hereby proclaim the week of February 20th through February 27th, 2023 as

Unclaimed Property Week

throughout the State of Maine, and I urge all citizens to utilize this free service and share this information with other Maine residents.
