Governor Janet Mills issued the following statement today in honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day:

In accordance with a directive of the President, Governor Janet Mills has ordered that the United States and State of Maine flags be lowered to half-staff statewide in honor of the late U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein of California, who passed away today at the age of 90. Consistent with the President’s directive, flags should remain lowered until sunset on the day of internment. The Governor issued the following statement:

Governor’s community climate program, the Community Resilience Partnership, now includes 174 towns, cities, and tribal governments in Maine, representing nearly 60 percent of state’s population

The Mills Administration today announced $2.4 million in awards to 53 communities across Maine to address climate change effects through investments to improve energy efficiency, transition to clean energy, expand local and regional planning capacity, and protect infrastructure from damaging storms or rising sea levels.

Governor Janet Mills today announced a $6.5 million Maine Jobs & Recovery program to help Maine businesses update electrical grid capacity at their facilities to expand their operations and workforce.

With the imminent threat posed by Hurricane Lee having passed, Governor Janet Mills announced today that she has suspended the State of Emergency she declared earlier this week in preparation for the storm. The Governor suspended the State of Emergency as now Post-Tropical Cyclone Lee continues to move eastward past Prince Edward Island.

Governor Janet Mills today applauded President Biden’s approval of her request for a Presidential Emergency Disaster Declaration in anticipation of Hurricane Lee. The President approved the Governor’s request late Thursday night.

In preparation for Hurricane Lee’s impending landfall tomorrow night, Governor Mills today declared a State of Emergency and requested that President Biden issue a preemptive Presidential Emergency Disaster Declaration for Maine.

Governor Janet Mills and the Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) are urging Maine people to be prepared in advance of Hurricane Lee potentially making landfall in Maine at the end of this week.

MEMA is closely monitoring the path of Hurricane Lee and is coordinating with State public safety and transportation officials, Federal and local emergency management officials, and Maine’s utilities in advance of the storm. MEMA has placed the Emergency Operations Center on enhanced monitoring status.

Governor Janet Mills announced today that her Administration has awarded $3.7 million in grant funding through her Maine Jobs & Recovery Plan to advance projects that will restore access to vital habitat for the state’s sea-run fish species.

The Maine Department of Marine Resources has awarded funding to 12 projects that include the construction of fishways, removal of obsolete structures, and enhancement of in-stream or coastal habitats.

Governor Janet Mills today announced that the Department of Economic and Community Development is accepting applications for the annual Governor’s Award for Business Excellence (GABE). Since 1991, the award has recognized and celebrated Maine businesses with a high level of commitment to their community and employees, as well as exemplary performance in the manufacturing or service professions.

In a letter to the Biden Administration, key Congressional Committees, and Maine’s Congressional Delegation, Governor Janet Mills outlined Maine’s priorities for the forthcoming farm bill.

In the August 30th letter, Governor Mills expressed her support for a comprehensive and equitable Farm Bill that addresses critical agriculture, nutrition, forestry, and conservation programs that will benefit Maine farmers and the agricultural community.

Boothbay, MAINE – To mark International Overdose Awareness Day, Governor Janet Mills today joined leaders, advocates, and individuals touched by substance use order at a remembrance and awareness ceremony hosted by the 716 Candles Project in Boothbay. The number “716” refers to the number of suspected or confirmed deaths attributed to drug overdose last year in Maine.

University of Maine awarded $1 million to establish new manufacturing center

Orono, MAINE – Governor Janet Mills and U.S. Senator Susan Collins today joined officials from the Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC) to announce that 16 Maine organizations have been awarded $11 million in Federal funding to strengthen economic opportunity in rural Maine communities.

Governor Janet Mills has requested that President Joe Biden issue Major Disaster Declarations to help Western Maine recover from June storms that brought heavy rainfall and flooding that caused more than $9 million in infrastructure damage. 

State of Maine ends Fiscal Year 2023 with a surplus, triggering funding to be distributed to the Budget Stabilization Fund and housing programs
