Governor Mills Nominates Candidates for University of Maine System and Maine Community College System Boards of Trustees

Governor Janet Mills announced today that she has nominated six people to the University of Maine and the Maine Community College System Boards of Trustees.

“The Boards of Trustees for the University of Maine System and the Maine Community College System play a pivotal role in ensuring our state’s higher education institutions lead the nation in learning, research, and community engagement,” said Governor Mills. “I am honored to nominate such experienced, qualified, and well-respected individuals who will steward the systems’ core missions and ensure our community colleges and public universities fulfill their responsibilities to students.”

Governor Mills reappointed James O. Donnelly of Brewer and Kelly A. Martin of Fort Kent and nominated Sven Bartholomew of Brewer to the University of Maine System Board of Trustees. She also reappointed former Representative Jean Ginn Marvin of Scarborough and nominated former State Senator Joyce A. Maker of Calais to the Maine Community College System Board of Trustees.

Governor Mills also nominated former Congressman Michael H. Michaud of East Millinocket to the Boards of Trustees for both the University of Maine System and the Maine Community College System.

Board nominations are subject to confirmation by the Legislature.

The University of Maine System Board of Trustees oversees the University of Maine System in areas such as academic programs, faculty tenure, tuition rates and operating budgets. The board consists of 16 members, 15 of which are appointed by the Governor. The Commissioner of the Department of Education serves as a member ex officio. Board members serve a five-year term and may be reappointed once.

The Maine Community College System Board of Trustees is the policy-making authority for the system. The Board consists of 13 appointed voting members, one ex-officio voting member, and one ex-officio non-voting member.

Governor Mills’ Nominations to the University of Maine System Board of Trustees:

For appointment, Sven Bartholomew of Brewer has served the University of Maine at Farmington throughout his career in several capacities including as President of the University of Maine at Farmington Alumni Council, on the Presidential Search Committee for Katherine Foster and on the University at Farmington’s Board of Visitors. Bartholomew currently works as the Selling District Sales Manager for Paychex, Inc. Prior to his work at Paychex, Bartholomew served as Bangor Savings Bank Senior Vice President for thirteen years. He is a graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington.

For reappointment, Hon. James O. Donnelly of Brewer has served on the University of Maine System Board of Trustees for five years. He currently works at Bangor Savings Bank, and previously worked at the Machias Savings Bank for fourteen years and Key Bank for ten years. Donnelly currently sits on the Northern Light Healthcare System Board of Directors for the University of Maine System. Donnelly also served in the Maine Legislature from 1991-98 and led his Republican caucus as Minority Leader in the House in the 118th Maine Legislature.

For reappointment, Kelly A. Martin of Fort Kent has served on the University of Maine System Board of Trustees for two years. Martin has worked for Prudential for more than twenty-five years, and currently serves on the Northern Maine Medical Center’s Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee and Northern Maine Medical Center’s Community Liaison Committee.

Governor Mills’ Nominations to the Community College System Board of Trustees:

For appointment, Hon. Joyce A. Maker of Calais served in both the Maine House of Representatives and Maine State Senate and was employed by Washington County Community College for thirty-six years. Maker was appointed to the Finance Authority of Maine by former Governors King and Baldacci and served on the board for eight years. She has also served on the Boards of Eastern Area Agency on Aging and the Children’s Trust.

For reappointment, Hon. Jean Ginn Marvin of Scarborough served in the Maine House of Representatives and has worked as an innkeeper of the Nonantum Resort in Kennebunkport, Maine for twenty years. She is the current chair of the Board of Trustees of the Maine Community College System and has also chaired the boards of Hospitality Maine, Southern Maine Community College Foundation, and Maine State Ethics Commission, among others.

Governor Mills’ Nominations to both Boards:

For appointment, Hon. Michael H. Michaud of East Millinocket served Maine’s Second Congressional District for twelve years in the United States Congress and for twenty-two years in the Maine State Legislature including as President of the State Senate, as President pro tempore of the Maine House of Representatives and as a member of the Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee. Michaud also worked at the Great Northern Paper Company for more than three decades and serves on the East Millinocket Board of Selectmen.
