Governor Mills Encourages Mainers to Stay Safe During Winter Storm

Augusta, Maine - With near blizzard conditions and 12 to 18 inches of snow projected across some areas of Maine this weekend, Governor Janet Mills today is urging Maine families to stay home whenever possible and to reach out to help any neighbors in need.

“I encourage Mainers to stay off the roads as much as possible this weekend to help avoid accidents and allow our state and municipal road crews to work safely,” said Governor Mills. “I also hope that families reach out to any of their neighbors in need. Mainers take care of one another and I have every confidence we will continue to do so through these winter months.”

Very strong winds and heavy snow causing blizzard-like conditions are expected throughout Maine.

During and after the storm:

  • What will you need if you are forced to shelter in place at home for three days and don’t have electricity? Build an emergency preparedness kit with a three-day supply of nonperishable food and a three-day supply of water (one gallon of water per person, per day).
  • Stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. Travel conditions are expected to be treacherous.
  • Reach out to neighbors, especially the elderly, who may need help during this storm.
  • If you lose power, use generators or alternate heat sources safely. Never use a generator inside homes, garages, crawlspaces, sheds, or similar areas, even when using fans or opening doors and windows for ventilation. Deadly levels of carbon monoxide can quickly build up in these areas and can linger for hours, even after the generator has shut off.
  • Follow the instructions that come with your generator. Locate the unit outdoors and at least 15 feet away from doors, windows, and vents.
  • Ensure all home vents are clear of snow to prevent Carbon Monoxide buildup.
  • After the storm has passed, consider whether or not excess snow needs to be cleared especially from flat roofs.
