WHEREAS, 1 in 31 children in the United States are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, and they can achieve independence and live purposeful lives when afforded the support system and opportunities that each and everyone deserves; and
WHEREAS, acceptance is often one of the biggest barriers to finding and developing a strong support system for people with autism, and organizations like the Autism Society of Maine understand that fostering acceptance is critical to achieve equity in education, employment, housing, health care, and comprehensive long-term services; and
WHEREAS, by expanding education and understanding, we can promote acceptance, inspire inclusion and create system-wide changes to achieve full participation within society; and
WHEREAS, we can continue to prioritize policies that break down barriers for people with autism, which means good jobs and more opportunities for employment; affordable, accessible, and integrated housing; accessible transportation; inclusive voting processes; and long-term services and supports; and
WHEREAS, we honor self-advocates, family caregivers, professionals, and all those who work every day to create more opportunities for those with autism; and
WHEREAS, together we can spread awareness, foster acceptance, and empower everyone in the autism community with the resources needed to live fully;
NOW THEREFORE, be it resolved that I, Janet T. Mills, Governor of the State of Maine, do hereby proclaim the month of April 2026 as
