State of Maine Proclamation

 

WHEREAS, born on July 25, 1750, Henry Knox participated in many of the most significant battles of the Revolutionary War and rose through the ranks to become one of General George Washington’s most trusted friends and reliable soldiers; and

WHEREAS, Knox served as Chief Artillery Officer in the Continental Army, as General in the United States Army, and as the first Secretary of War in President George Washington’s cabinet; and

WHEREAS, following his military service, Knox moved with his family to Thomaston, Maine in 1794, where he became a gentleman farmer, helped establish a local church, started local militia groups, and employed many townspeople until his death in 1806; and

WHEREAS, the Knox family home, known as Montpelier, now stands as a museum to honor the life and service of this war hero and founding father; and

WHEREAS, Title I, §138 states that the Governor shall annually issue a proclamation designating July 25th of each year as Major-General Henry Knox Day;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Janet T. Mills, Governor of the great State of Maine, do hereby proclaim July 25, 2023 as

Major-General Henry Knox Day

throughout the State of Maine, and I urge all citizens to recognize this observance.
