Outreach

The Maine Natural Areas Program (MNAP) believes that voluntary conservation by landowners is the most effective way to protect Maine's natural heritage. Most of Maine's land is privately owned, and MNAP strives to be a helpful resource for landowners with questions about land management and biodiversity issues, ranging from wetland restoration to forest certification.

We periodically notify landowners whose lands support significant natural features so that they can make informed decisions in planning for the use of their lands. We work cooperatively with small and large landowners on inventory and assessment projects. We obtain landowner permission prior to conducting field work, and we follow up with landowners regarding site-specific management and conservation considerations.

MNAP staff may also be available for educational purposes including forester training, land trust workshops, instruction at college courses, and other events. Please contact MNAP at maine.nap@maine.gov for further information.
