Purpose

The State Board of Funeral Services was established to protect the public through the regulation of the practice of funeral services in the State of Maine.

The primary responsibilities of the Board is to examine and license qualified applicants for licensure to practice funeral service, to inspect funeral establishments and to revoke or to refuse to renew any licenses after proper notice and hearing.

What's New

Rulemaking 

CHAPTER 12, TRANSPORTATION OF HUMAN REMAINS (Repeal and Replace) 

This is the final adoption of a major substantive rule that was approved by the Legislature through LD 374 (Resolve C. 20). The rule establishes minimum standards for how containers, platforms, or transportation equipment must be secured in vehicles owned, leased, or otherwise used by a practitioner of funeral services.

Multipurpose funeral vehicles owned or leased by funeral establishments or funeral practitioners must be in compliance with the rule as soon as practicable, but no later than five (5) years form the effective date of the rule which is September 23, 2023;Final Adoption Ch 12.pdf

NOTICE CONCERNING DELIVERY OF FUNERAL SERVICE LICENSES
Funeral Service licenses are now delivered to licensees via email. The email sender is displayed as "noreply@maine.gov" and the subject as "YOUR OFFICIAL (license type) LICENSE IS ATTACHED". Paper licenses will NOT be mailed to licensees with an email address on file with the Board.
