Apple Lost/Stolen Procedure

If you have a situation involving a device that is lost or stolen, please follow the recovery steps listed below:
If the device can not be recovered, a police report must be filed. Police reports for lost/stolen MLTI devices should include the following information:
• serial number (or asset tag) of the missing device
• a brief description of the incident
• any device accessories that require replacement (case or sleeve, chargers, etc.) Police reports can be sent via email to mlti.project@maine.gov, or fax 877-494-MLTI (6584).

If a paid replacement is needed, follow the appropriate paid replacement procedure after submitting a police report to the MLTI Project Office. MLTI will issue your school a replacement device as soon as we have received all required documentation.

Recovery Steps for Lost/Stolen Device

  1. If the user was signed in to the device with a personal Apple ID, have the user log into iCloud.com on any internet- connected device with their Apple ID. Go to Find My iPhone (works for iPad and MacBook Air) and search for the device. The end user can initiate a sound and remotely lock the device (as long as it is connected to WiFi).

  2. If step one is not successful, use Jamf Pro to gather information on the device:

For iPad:

  1. Log in to your district Jamf Pro instance.

  2. In Devices, look up the device by serial number or asset tag.

  3. Find the Last Inventory Update under Inventory > General. This indicates the last time the device reported inventory to Jamf Pro. You may be asked for this information by police or the DOE team.

  1. Find the IP address in Inventory > General. This indicates the last IP address the device reported from. You may be asked to provide this information to the police or the DOE team.

  2. Turn on Lost Mode in Management by clicking the button called Enable Lost Mode. This locks the device and provides a phone number on the lock screen to report the device missing. It also determines the iPad’s approximate location based on its IP address. You can view this location information in Security > Approximate Location.

For Mac OS:

  1. Log in to your district Jamf Pro instance.

  2. In Computers, look up the device by serial number or asset tag.

  3. In Inventory > General, note the Last Check-in timestamp. This indicates the last time the device checked in to Jamf Pro. You may be asked for this information by police or the DOE team.

  4. Find the IP address in Inventory > General. This indicates the last reported IP address. You may be asked for this information by police or the DOE team.

  5. You can look up the approximate location online using the IP address obtained from Jamf Pro.
