Riverview is a tobacco-free and fragrance-free campus. Thank you for not smoking or wearing heavily scented products.
Please follow the visitors guidelines outlined here to protect the safety, rights, and privacy of visitors and patients alike.
Appropriate behavior is expected. Security will be notified immediately of any issues associated with the behavior of any visitor and, if necessary, escort the visitor off hospital premises.
Visiting Hours
- 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm Monday through Friday
- 12:00 pm (noon) – 8:00 pm Weekends and Holidays
Visits are typically restricted to one (1) hour per visit.
Check-in Procedures
Upon arrival to Riverview Psychiatric Center (RPC), all visitors must sign-in at the reception area (located at main entrance), show a photo ID, and obtain a visitor’s badge. The visitor must identify whom they plan to visit, and staff must confirm that the patient can accept visitors before the visitor is allowed to proceed to the unit visitor room.
All visitors are screened upon arrival. The visitor’s badge must be worn at all times and returned to security before departing the hospital.
Any items not relevant to the visit or not being delivered to the patient may be stored in the visitor’s vehicle or in a locker at the main entrance.
Security/Switchboard Staff will notify the unit that the visitor has items for the patient. Unit staff will then account for and catalogue approved items.
Prohibited Items
Should any items be identified as contraband (i.e. dangerous to patients or reduce patient safety within the unit environment) Security staff or the unit charge nurse will dispose of the item.
Items that appear to be alcoholic beverages or illegal substances, will be removed by Security.
Prohibited items include but are not limited to: Cigarettes and smoking materials, matches and lighters, canned soda, items containing caffeine, alcohol, illicit drugs, glass or ceramics of any kind, knives and other objects with sharp edges, other weapons and dangerous materials including flammable liquids, cleaning agents, and explosives. Patients cannot receive over-the-counter drugs, such as Tylenol or Aspirin, as they can interfere with prescription medications.
Patient Food
To promote optimal physical health every patient will have a medical staff order for a diet that meets their medical and nutritional requirements.
- Food may only be brought in by visitors on designated holidays, to include Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, and the patient’s birthday (exceptions may be made by the treatment team for other holidays/religious observances).
- All items brought into the hospital must be factory sealed for safety purposes and will be screened by security.
- No metal or glass containers.
- No caffeinated beverages including soda, coffee, energy drinks, etc.
Access to patient living areas and to patients by media and hospital visitors
To ensure patient confidentiality, permission from Riverview's Superintendent must be provided for any person requesting access to a patient living area for a purpose other than visiting a patient.
Patients are informed in advance that a hospital visitor and/or member of the media will be visiting within the patients' unit/living area to allow patients enough time to go to the privacy of their individual rooms.
No photographs or names of patients may be used without their written permission. If the patient is not capable of making this decision, it must be made by a legal representative.
