Training Philosophy and Goals

The purpose of the Staff Education and Training Unit (SETU) of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services is to design, implement, monitor and evaluate a coherent and effective staff training system. Core competency programs, specialized training and consulting services are offered statewide, in each of the Department’s geographic areas. The primary focus of the system is to meet the educational and training needs of the Department of Human Services, foster and adoptive parents and  local provider agencies, in order to improve the quality and delivery of social services to the citizens of Maine.  Through the delivery of these programs it is our intent to be  respectful, responsive, efficient and creative.

The Child Welfare Training Institute (CWTI) has maintained a collaborative agreement with the Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) for several years.  Through this agreement CWTI has provided state of the art training not only to DHHS staff, but also to foster and adoptive parents and other caregivers throughout the state of Maine.

This joint catalog not only recognizes the necessity of high quality, comprehensive training for DHHS staff, social service providers, and foster and adoptive parents, but also aims to facilitate a greater understanding and dialogue between these  groups of caregivers through mutual learning opportunities.

Due to reduced resources both in the public and private sector, program offerings will only be available on our website. We request that DHHS managers and supervisors review the programs offered with their staff to select those programs which will contribute both to professional development and organizational needs while meeting the challenges of diminished resources.

We at SETU and CWTI will continue to pursue our stated mission and welcome any comments you might have about this  joint catalog of programs.

The Department of Health and  Human Services and CWTI encourage participation in their training programs by female, minority and handicapped individuals.
