Maine Coastal Program supports efforts to inventory Maine’s working waterfronts through extensive collaboration with partners, funding certain projects, and providing support and feedback to other efforts. Recent efforts include:
Statewide Rapid Working Waterfront Inventory Methodology (MCP funded; work completed by Maine Coast Fishermen’s Association with support from Viewshed)
Through a competitive bidding process, Maine Coastal Program selected Maine Coast Fishermen’s Association (MCFA) to create a statewide inventory methodology and a typology to identify and group Maine’s diverse working waterfronts. This tool is designed to be completed by multiple smaller groups on a larger scale; while it may not achieve the same level of detail as the report below, it allows for statewide numbers to be collected and updated on a regular basis. Multiple partners can enter data into a shared database that is hosted by Viewshed.

Working Waterfront Inventory Report and Template (MCP early feedback; project led by Maine Coast Fishermen’s Association)
The Maine Coast Fishermen’s Association (MCFA) created a standardized Working Waterfront Inventory template and report intended to support community planning and to be completed by local staff or volunteers. This tool is designed to help municipalities take stock of their waterfront infrastructure, assess vulnerabilities to climate change and sea-level rise, and prioritize funding for resilient development. By completing this inventory, towns can collect data on their working waterfront infrastructure and the local economic impact of fisheries and aquaculture using an accessible, step-by-step approach. The report helps communities identify and understand the status of their working waterfronts, and provides the tools to monitor, preserve, and invest in working waterfront for future generations.
