Maine Coastal Cleanup

The Maine Coastal Program has been the State Coordinator for the International Coastal Cleanup for over 30 years and remains committed to supporting and facilitating annual Cleanups of Maine's coastal beaches and waterways.

The International Coastal Cleanup was established four decades ago to address the problem of trash in our oceans and on our coasts. Ocean Conservancy manages the ICC and maintains a database of all the items that volunteers around the world record when collecting trash. In 2020, the one-day event in September became a whole month of Cleanups around the world.

Volunteers support this effort by adopting a location and soliciting others to join them in cleaning up the trash from their location of choice and help to keep our coast and ocean trash free.

Thanks to all the volunteers who make this event a success every year!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out if the beach I would like to clean is already reserved?

Most beach locations are listed in the dropdown menu in the Location section of the registration form. As beaches are adopted, they are removed from the menu. If you have any questions, email Theresa Torrent at theresa.torrent@maine.gov

What supplies will Maine Coastal Program send to me?

You'll receive data forms for recording debris, trash bags, instructions, and certificates for children (if requested).

What should I do with the data cards?

Please scan and email your cards, or you can type in and email your results to theresa.torrent@maine.gov. We are also encouraging the use of the Clean Swell App that has been developed by Ocean Conservancy to use with your smart phone and eliminates the need for paper, pens, and clipboards.

Where do I take the debris after it is collected?

Please dispose of debris at your local transfer station.

How can I volunteer for a 2026 Cleanup without being a Coordinator?

The following sites are looking for volunteers. Contact the Coordinator at the email address provided.
