Brunswick legislators welcome students to Maine State House

Mattie Daughtry welcomed students and teachers from the Brunswick High School Off Campus Learning Program to the Maine State House last Thursday, Feb.1. In addition to touring the Capitol and visiting the House Gallery, the students met with Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows.

Arford named House chair of legislative task force on health care facility fees

AUGUSTA - Rep. Poppy Arford, D-Brunswick, has been named House chair of a legislative panel tasked with reviewing the impact of so-called "facility fees," which are fees that hospitals and health care providers add to patient bills in addition to their professional fees for services provided.

The Task Force to Evaluate the Impact of Facility Fees on Patients held its first meeting at the State House on Friday, Dec. 1.

Lawmakers approve Arford bill to study creation of state-level public option health plan

AUGUSTA - Lawmakers gave final approval Wednesday to a measure from Rep. Poppy Arford, D-Brunswick, to explore the creation of a state-level public option health plan.

"Access to affordable health care for all is a priority for me, because it is a priority for Maine people," said Arford. "As a longtime advocate for patients and health care consumers, I have heard from countless people who have struggled to access the care they need when they need it. This bill will put our state on a path to reduce costs, expand choice and improve coverage for everyone."

Local lawmakers welcome Brunswick High School civics classes to State House

Reps. Poppy Arford, D-Brunswick, Dan Ankeles, D-Brunswick, and Cheryl Golek, D-Harpswell, welcomed students from Brunswick High School's rights and responsibilities of citizenship and AP government classes to the State House on Tuesday. The classes are taught by Ben Clark and Connor Lynch.

Rep. Poppy Arford is serving her third term in the Maine Legislature. She is a member of the Health Coverage, Insurance and Financial Services Committee, where she has led bipartisan efforts to improve health care price transparency and study a public option for health care coverage.

Arford previously served on the Brunswick Town Council and on Brunswick’s Sustainability Committee. She was named the 2023 Legislator of the Year by the Brunswick-based Independence Association.
