Maine Conservation Corps (MCC) is seeking a videographer and video editor(s) who can create a few short film projects to help us in our marketing and recruitment endeavors.
MCC is an AmeriCorps program that provides opportunities for people to get outdoors and contribute to the greater good. Our mission is to accomplish conservation initiatives that inspire people and enhance communities, and that's what we've been doing since our establishment in 1983.
Every year, we place almost 100 individuals throughout the entire state of Maine to conserve and protect our natural resources. They participate in trail maintenance and erosion control, water quality and wildlife monitoring, invasive plant removal, outdoor education and outreach, and so much more.
In addition, we provide people with an opportunity to learn valuable life skills, gain confidence, and become lifelong advocates of the environment.
We need your help to spread the word about the awesome things we are getting done!
Responsibilities
- Produce short marketing videos 30, 60, or 90 seconds in length
- Ensure our key messages and goals are incorporated into the videos
- Possession of necessary film equipment, including camera, editing software, lighting, or sound equipment
- Travel with or without an MCC staff person to project sites to get footage of members and projects
- Edit footage and collaborate with MCC staff to create the final product
- Input music, dialogues, graphics, and effects
- Ensure logical sequencing and smooth running
- Collect appropriate consent from persons interviewed, photographed, etc.
- Ensure final products are accessible (e.g., audio descriptions, closed captions, etc.)
- Receive express written consent from MCC before disseminating products
- Check-in regularly with MCC staff for updates and communicate any needs through email or face-to-face meetings
Qualifications
- Professional or personal experience in video production: filming, image, and sound editing (samples of past work would be very appreciated)
- Professional, energetic, creative, and self-motivated
- Effective communicator and troubleshooter
- Ability to make decisions and follow through with minimal supervision
- Ability to follow through and meet deadlines and possess a strong sense of responsibility

Invasive Plant Workshop - Augusta

Join Kennebec County Soil and Water Conservation District (KCSWCD) in collaboration with Viles Arboretum for a day focused on identifying, mapping, and managing Maine's invasive plants. The workshop combines classroom learning with hands-on field experience.
Chad Hammer, Invasive Plant Biologist with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and Jared Gregory, Maine Forest Service District Forester, will explore invasive plant identification, impacts, spread patterns, Early Detection/Rapid Response, management strategies, and tools such as iMapInvasives.
The afternoon will include a guided Invasive Plant Walk & Talk at Viles Arboretum, where participants will see invasive plants in the field and discuss practical management and control techniques.
All attendees will receive a free Maine Invasive Plants Field Guide ($25 value)

50 Years of Woodlot Management - Embden

Please join Upper Kennebec Valley chapter leader and Maine Forest Service District Forester Jason Hilton on Saturday October 10th from 9-noon at the property of Robert Donovan located at 547 Dunbar Hill Road, Embden. Robert (Bob) first bought his property in 1974 and started by cutting trees to build his house. He has continued to manage and improve his forest by making timber stand improvements, pruning, planting, and thinning. Some other things Bob has done with his property has been selling Christmas trees, harvesting fir tips, and cutting firewood. Bob now cuts around 10-wheeler loads of wood a winter using his 1980 timber jack skidder. If you would like to learn what has worked and not worked over Bob's 50 years, please join us. We will be walking about 2 miles over uneven terrain, so please wear comfortable shoes. After the tour there will be a potluck cookout so bring a dish for everyone to enjoy and learn what it takes for long term forest management. Autumn Adventure at Bradbury Mountain State Park

Spend the day celebrating the beauty of fall in Maine at Bradbury Mountain State Park while learning about the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace.
10:00 AM - 2:00 PM Get hands-on with interactive educational booths, and view demonstrations by the Maine Search and Rescue Dogs and Wilderness Rescue Team. There will be fun fall arts and crafts, pumpkin painting, and other hands-on activities too!
2:00 to 4:00 PM Hike the Trail of Treats and collect treat bags from the 7 Leave No Trace Principles. Each station will have educational information and treat bag to collect.
3:00 to 5:00 PM Relax by a campfire with the rangers. Roast some hotdogs and make a s'more but be sure to stick around because Trivia starts at 4:00 PM. Test your knowledge on what you have learned throughout the day for a great chance to win some incredible prizes. And, be sure to remain on the lookout for Big Foot sightings.
Food will be available throughout the day from Brickyard Hollow and Trailside Treats.

What is Live Staking?
Live staking is a low-cost, natural "bioengineering" technique used to repair eroding shorelines. It involves taking dormant cuttings from specific native trees and shrubs-like willows and dogwoodsand planting them directly into the ground. Because these species are incredibly resilient, the stakes will grow a new root system, effectively creating a living wall of vegetation.
Why is it necessary?
- Reduces erosion: The new root systems act like rebar for the soil, binding it together and preventing it from washing away during heavy rains.
- Protects water quality: By stabilizing the bank, we prevent sediment from clouding the water and harming aquatic life.
- Cooler habitats: As these stakes grow into mature shrubs, they provide shade that keeps water temperatures cool for native fish.
All are welcome! Participants under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
