State Jobs

The Maine State Civil Service System covers employees of the Executive Branch of Maine State Government. Selection and advancement are based upon merit principles without regard to sex, age, race, color, religion, national origin, political affiliation, and physical or mental handicap.

WHO IS COVERED?

Classified Competitive and Classified Direct Hire positions fall within civil service requirements. Unclassified positions consist mostly of high-level, policy-making, appointed positions and are not covered by civil service requirements.

COMPETITIVE POSITIONS

All classified competitive positions are filled from employment registers as vacancies in these jobs occur. The Bureau of Human Resources publishes Career Opportunity Bulletins for jobs open to application. These bulletins contain important information about the duties and responsibilities of the job, minimum qualifications required, and the examination process for placement on the employment registers. You should review the bulletins of any jobs in which you are interested prior to completing the application form. Bulletins and applications for competitive positions are available online and all Maine CareerCenter Offices.

DIRECT HIRE POSITIONS

Classified Direct Hire positions are generally advanced professional or highly specialized technical jobs usually having a license or certification requirement. They also include positions involving unskilled and semi-skilled labor, attendant, domestic, or custodial duties. Direct Hire positions are listed online.

UNCLASSIFIED POSITIONS

Unclassified positions, usually designated by law, have no civil service status and are not managed under the civil service system.
