Union Membership Dips in 2009
February 1, 2010
The number of Maine workers belonging to unions declined last year to 11.7 percent of the total workforce, down from 12.3 percent the year before. The drop mirrors a similar decline on the national level and reflects, in part, steep job losses in the construction and manufacturing sectors over the year.
In the U.S. more public sector employees (7.9 million) belonged to a union than did private sector employees (7.4 million,) with workers in education, training, and library occupations at the highest unionization rate. New York had the highest union membership rate at 25.2 percent, and North Carolina had the lowest rate at 3.1 percent.
