November Programs for Job Seekers at the Augusta CareerCenter

AUGUSTA--Maine CareerCenters bring job seekers and employers together. For those who are looking to make a change in careers or get a new job, the Augusta CareerCenter is offering a variety of programs for job seekers in November.
"Job seekers that go to a Maine CareerCenter can access information and no-cost services to help them find a new or better job," said Governor Paul R. LePage. "Employers need a skilled workforce now and in the future. Our unemployment rate has been historically low for 34 straight months and our employment-to-population ratio is consistently above the national average. This is an opportune time to find a job or develop skills to further your career. Maine CareerCenters will help."
Unless otherwise noted, all workshops and events are held at the Augusta CareerCenter, co-located with Maine Department of Labor at 45 Commerce Drive, Augusta. To register for sessions held at the Augusta CareerCenter, call 624-5120.
Federal Job Search - Wednesday, November 7, 9 a.m. to 12 noon
Would you like to work for the Federal Government? Maybe obtain a JOB at Togus VA Medical Center in Augusta? Apply on USA JOBS.GOV. Learn the application process that is required for Federal Government positions posted on USAJOBS.gov.
Interview Skills - Friday, November 9, 9 a.m. to 12 noon
Gain the confidence needed to ace that interview and get the job! Go in thoroughly prepared and positive you are the applicant the employer needs! Interviewing Skills and Techniques workshop covers communication techniques, before-the-interview research, attitude and appearance, examples of questions you may be asked, what you can ask the employer, post interview follow-up, and more. Discuss all the "Do's and Don'ts" and what to expect during the process. Workshop limited to six participants. Sign-up early to reserve your spot.
Starting a Business - Wednesday, November 14, 9 to 11 a.m.
Interested in self-employment? This workshop will help you decide if self-employment is the right choice for you. We will cover the pros and cons of owning your own business, the steps needed for start-up, the major elements of a business plan, and the many resources available to help you succeed. Facilitator: Jean Dempster, New Ventures Maine, formerly Women, Work, and Community.
Resume Writing - Thursday, November 15, 1 to 4 p.m.
This workshop provides valuable tips on completing job applications, the importance of cover letters, resume content and formatting, resume writing using computer software programs and much more. Learn why having a great resume is so important in today's job market. A well written resume can get your foot in the door, and the interview - the next step to employment. Workshop limited to six. CareerCenter at Educare and the Waterville Public Library, Tuesdays, November 6 and 20
These two-hour, hands-on workshops will provide assistance with learning more about training money available, signing up for Maine JobLink, searching for jobs, working on resumes and applying for jobs. Will also discuss various resources found at your local CareerCenter, including Maine JobLink, the Competitive Skills Scholarship Program, Vocational Rehabilitation, Youth Employment and the Steps to Success, and addressing eligibility requirements associated with some of these programs.
If you are or know someone who could use assistance in help in paying for training, preparing for, seeking, securing, and/or maintaining employment please come to these valuable sessions, held every other Tuesday of the month at Educare, 56 Drummond Ave., Waterville, from 8 to 9:45 a.m., and the Waterville Public Library, 73 Elm St., 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Learn how the Maine Department of Labor CareerCenters help those seeking employment and training. These sessions are drop-in classes, no sign up required.

CareerCenters, part of the Maine Department of Labor, offer a variety of services to help people find employment or upgrade skills. Each center provides several public-access computer workstations with Microsoft Office software, resume writing and cover letter software, Internet access and O*Net software for skills assessment. All CareerCenter services are no cost.
