AUGUSTA--Maine CareerCenters bring job seekers and employers together. For those who are looking to make a change in careers or get a new job, the Augusta CareerCenter is offering a variety of programs for job seekers in August.

"I urge those looking for careers in this tight labor market to visit any CareerCenter," stated Governor Paul R. LePage. "They provide resources and services that will assist you in improving your resume and preparing for job interviews."

All workshops and events are held at the CareerCenter unless otherwise noted. To register for sessions held at the Augusta CareerCenter, call 624-5120.

Computer Basics - Mondays, August 6 and 20, 9 to 11 a.m.

This course is designed for the novice user and will cover the basics to get you "up and running" with your job search. Introduction to the "basics" of computers and typing a document using Microsoft Word, and registering and understanding the Maine JobLink website.

CareerCenter at Educare and the Waterville Public Library - Tuesdays, August 7 and 21, 8 to 9:45 a.m. at Educare and 10 a.m. to 12 noon at Waterville Public Library

These hands-on workshops provide assistance with learning more about training money available, signing up for Maine JobLink, searching for jobs, improving resumes and applying for jobs as well as discuss resources at CareerCenters such as Maine JobLink, the Competitive Skills Scholarship Program, Vocational Rehabilitation, Youth Employment and the Steps to Success and the subsequent eligibility requirements associated with the programs. No registration required.

Gateway to Employment - Tuesdays, August 7 and 21, 10 a.m. to 12 noon

This workshop will provide you with more information about the resources the CareerCenter has to offer, including the newest tools to assist you in conducting an efficient and productive job search. Topics covered include: how to tap into the "hidden job market," identifying the skills you have to offer employers, tips on successfully completing applications, resumes and cover letters and how to register and apply for jobs posted through the CareerCenter.

Interview Skills - Monday, August 13, 1 to 3 p.m.

Gain the confidence needed to ace that interview and get the job! Go in thoroughly prepared and positive you are the applicant the employer needs! Interviewing Skills and Techniques Workshop covers communication techniques, before-the-interview research, attitude and appearance, examples of questions you may be asked, what you can ask the employer, post interview follow-up, and more. Discuss all the "DO'S and DON'TS" and what to expect during the process.

Resume Writing - Wednesday, August 15, 9 to 11 a.m.

This workshop provides valuable tips on completing job applications, the importance of cover letters, resume content and formatting, resume writing using computer software programs and much more. Learn why having a great resume is so important in today's job market. A well written resume can get your foot in the door, and the interview - the next step to employment.

Starting a Business - Wednesday, August 22, 9 to 11 a.m.

Interested in self-employment? This workshop will help you decide if self-employment is the right choice for you. We will cover the pros and cons of owning your own business, the steps needed for start-up, the major elements of a business plan, and the many resources available to help you succeed. Facilitator: Jean Dempster, New Ventures Maine, formerly Women, Work, and Community.

Each center provides several public-access computer workstations with Microsoft Office software, resume writing and cover letter software, Internet access and O'Net software for skills assessment.
