Meyer earns national recognition from American Cancer Society

House advances bill to bolster Maine's efforts to prevent child abuse and neglect

AUGUSTA - The Maine House gave initial approval Tuesday to a bill sponsored by Rep. Michele Meyer, D-Eliot, that seeks to restore Maine's once successful child welfare system. The House advanced the measure "under the hammer," or by unanimous consent.

The proposal comes in response to the worst year on record for children's deaths involving abuse, neglect or in households with prior involvement with child protective services in 2021.

Just like every other aspect of life, the legislative session that wrapped up a few weeks ago looked quite different from usual due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of our committee meetings were held via Zoom, and for several months, the full Legislature convened at the Augusta Civic Center instead of the State House to allow for social distancing. Despite the challenges, my colleagues and I passed several landmark measures that will make a real difference for communities and families across the state.

House enacts bill to strengthen lead testing in school drinking water

AUGUSTA - A bill to strengthen lead testing in school drinking water received unanimous support Monday from the Maine House of Representatives.

LD 206 amends state rules to decrease the standard for lead in school drinking water from 15 parts per billion (ppb) to 4 ppb and requires schools to share results with the public within five days.
