AUGUSTA - Rep. Michele Meyer, D-Eliot, has been named the 2021 Legislative Hero to Older Mainers by the Maine Council on Aging. The award recognizes lawmakers who have led efforts to benefit the state's older residents.
"The well-being of our older neighbors was one of the key issues that led me to run for the Maine House of Representatives," said Meyer. "I have seen firsthand the challenges older Mainers face, from the cost of health care to the shortage of safe, affordable housing. I have been proud to partner with the Maine Council on Aging in this important work and am truly honored by this recognition."
As House chair of the Legislature's Health and Human Services Committee, Meyer has played a central role in crafting policies that benefit older Mainers. Her work this session included efforts to address Maine's direct care workforce crisis and increasing wages among these essential workers. The Maine Council on Aging also highlighted Meyer's local work to keep older residents safe during the pandemic by organizing volunteers to help with everything from running errands to sewing reusable cloth face coverings.
The Maine Council on Aging is a network of more than 90 organizations, businesses, municipalities and older Mainers formed to address public policy concerns facing older adults in Maine. The award winners will be honored at the upcoming virtual Maine Wisdom Summit on September 21, 2021.
Meyer, a registered nurse, is serving her second term in the Maine House. She represents House District 2, which comprises Eliot, part of South Berwick and part of Kittery.
