AUGUSTA - The Maine House of Representatives unanimously voted to enact a proposal on Thursday sponsored by Rep. Tavis Hasenfus, D-Readfield, to expand the list of persons exempt from the real estate transfer tax.

"Expanding this exemption will bring equity to blended families and extended family units," said Hasenfus. "This will better implement the existing policy of intra-family real estate transactions."

AUGUSTA - Rep. Tavis Hasenfus, D-Readfield, is urging the Legislature's Joint Standing Committee on Transportation to ensure that Maine's railroad infrastructure, and the communities it intersects, are safe and secure.

Hasenfus asked the committee to act after hearing growing concerns in his district following the news coverage of the train that derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, last month. House District 57, which includes Winthrop and Readfield, and neighboring districts experience regular freight traffic.

Each year, the Maine State Treasurer's Office releases a list of the unclaimed property in our state. The Unclaimed Property Program includes millions of dollars' worth of Mainers property that has been unable to be returned to its rightful owner. This property includes bank balances from old accounts, forgotten stock dividends and overpaid bills, to give just a few examples.
